An Educational Visit To IIHR, Bengaluru

An educational visit was organised for the students of grade 9 to the Mushroom Research Laboratory, under the division of Plant Pathology at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru on 5th August 2026.

They were able to analyse how IIHR is directing their efforts to bridge the ancient knowledge with cutting-edge research to make mushroom accessible, profitable and acceptable to the Indian population.

They also learnt about the scientific methods of mushroom production, conservation, spawn production, its cultivation techniques, nutritional benefits, and its potential as a sustainable livelihood option. The interactive demonstrations and expert guidance helped them appreciate the importance of horticultural research in agriculture and food security.

The students got valuable insight into the cultivation of different varieties of fruits, avocado, mango, dragon fruit, etc.

The visit broadened the students’ understanding of vocational opportunities in horticulture, mushroom cultivation in particular and inspired them to explore innovative and entrepreneurial prospects in the field. They were informed about the training programmes IIHR conducts for mushroom cultivation in detail.

They returned enriched with practical knowledge, renewed curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for scientific research and sustainable agricultural practices.
